Butterfly Wreath

Butterfly Wreath

My friend Becky's birthday was June 10.  I have had the perfect present in mind for her for over a year.  I saw these cute butterflies at Hobby Lobby last summer and I immediately thought of Becky.

She loves butterflies and she loves purple.  I didn’t buy them back then.  Thankfully, they were still there this summer.  Here’s what I used to make this wreath.  The butterflies, yarn, a straw wreath, some scrap black fabric, and a hot glue gun.  I ended up not using the ribbon.DSCN5506

Start by wrapping your wreath in yarn.  I used straw because it was the size I wanted but you can use the foam kind.  I find it to be easier to roll your yarn up into a ball for this (and most other projects).  Now I understand why my job was to roll my mom and grandma’s yarn up into a ball back in the day.  This is the most tedious step between the rolling and the wrapping.  Get cozy, it’ll take a while!  Sit back, turn on So You Think You Can Dance, and wrap.  Periodically, put a little glue down to hold the yarn in place.  Be VERY careful with the hot glue if you use it.  You can use any other kind of glue (I used Elmer’s School Glue to make one for my front door) I just didn’t have any.  Here it is halfway done.   I wrapped mine twice to make sure I got the bare spots.

Once that was finished I made a rolled fabric flower.  There are a ton of tutorials out there on the web.  Cut a long thin strip of fabric, fold it in half and roll it up pretty tight for a few inches.  Then you’re going to twist and roll.  Every so often glue or stitch the flower.  I stitched this flower, it was a little tough so I recommend a really strong needle and a thimble.  I made rolled fabric flowers before with fabric glue.  It required some drying time but worked just fine.  I would not recommend hot glue unless you have asbestos fingers.  Here’s a close up of the flower.

After the flower was done it was time to glue and place on the wreath.  Then I positioned the butterflies where I wanted them and got a second opinion from my sweet husband (hi honey!).  Once he confirmed it looked okay I glued those babies on.  I decided to use the same fabric to make a “ribbon” handle to hang it up somewhere.  It was really fun to make!  What do you think?
